Vacatur differs from reversal: it sets the judgment aside without directing the opposite result, leaving the lower court to decide the question again under the correct legal standard or on a fuller record. It is the usual disposition where a claim construction was wrong and the infringement analysis must be redone, where a damages theory rested on an improper methodology, or where the record does not support review. The opinion ordinarily identifies the error and the standard to apply on remand, and the district court proceedings that follow frequently appear in this collection under the same docket.
