These are dispositions ending a claim, a party, or an entire case without reaching a judgment on the merits of infringement or validity. Dismissal may follow a successful challenge to the pleadings, a lack of jurisdiction or standing, a settlement, or a voluntary withdrawal. Whether it is with or without prejudice determines whether the claim may be brought again, and that distinction is usually stated in the order's operative paragraph. Because dismissal can end a case at any stage, the documents in this group range from brief administrative orders to full opinions explaining why a claim could not proceed. The docket often continues after dismissal where other parties or claims remain.
